Istituto Affari Internazionali

The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), founded in 1965 by Altiero Spinelli as a non-profit organisation, is Italy’s major international affairs research centre and the one with the most developed international network capabilities. The Institute’s mission is to promote the understanding of international relations through inter-disciplinary and policy-oriented research and meetings. The institute participates in major international research networks such as EuroMeSCo, New Med, EPIN or ISN. Since 2012 IAI is also a partner in the project “Turkey, Europe and the World” with the Istanbul Policy Center and the Mercator Foundation, producing the publication series “Global Turkey in Europe”. Besides research on Turkey and its neighbourhood IAI’s main research areas of interest are European integration and the EU’s global role, transatlantic relations, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, international security as well as international political economy and Italian foreign policy. IAI’s research also addresses the policies and institutional setting as well as the external dimension of EU's energy policy. In particular, this effort focuses on a set of geographical areas that are of strategic value for European energy security, and paying significant attention to the role of Turkey as an emerging regional energy player, and the impact of the development of the Southern Gas Corridor on Europe's energy security. IAI has a lead role in several new H2020 projects funded by the European Comission. Besides FEUTURE this includes the MEDRESET project, which aims to reset the general understanding of the Mediterranean and develop alternative visions for new partnerships and correspondence of EU policies. IAI is also involved in the MENARA project that focuses on the MENA-region and the potential strategies and policies that the EU is called upon to adopt in order to make its role in this particular region more effective.
